This is a classic white, handcrafted porcelain Gaiwan with a capacity of 120ml/4.1oz with a set of four small 25ml cups made in the Fujian province of China.
A Gaiwan is a traditional Chinese tea brewing cup that is widely used in China and is also used in the “Gongfu” tea ceremony. It consists of a cup with a lid and a saucer. The lid is used to cover the cup to retain the tea temperature while brewing, and also functions as a sieve to hold back the tea leaves when tea is poured in cups. It is a perfect brewing cup for Green and White teas, as well as Oolong and Pu-erh teas since the porcelain of the Gaiwan absorbs the brewing water heat and does not damage the tea. The tea drinker can re-infuse the tea leaves a number of times in the Gaiwan. The steep slope of the lid, combined with the fine edge around the rim, provides good control and makes this Gaiwan easy to use.
